What Is API Movement Building?

apipower - Posted on 15 August 2009

We are building an Asian/API Movement that stands for full equality, social justice, and social change.

While a lot of people are doing good work in our different issue areas, it is important to develop a larger vision, and, in the long run, a more coordinated strategy, for social change. There is a lot of class polarization, divisions between different ethnic communities, and a broad spectrum of political ideas. We see potential in increased activism, especially among youth, and that many people's consciousness has been affected by recent events such as Wen Ho Lee, 9/11, the war on Iraq, and the re-election of Bush. We feel the absence of a strong progressive voice in the Asian/API Movement today, and want to rebuild that voice, not in isolation but in a way that can set a social change tone for our communities and the movement as a whole. Asian American Movement Ezine

In the summer of 1999, a group of Asian Americans in the Boston, MA area wanted a vehicle to network Asian American activists in different geographies, across generations, and with differing viewpoints in order to build Asian American activism. This became the Asian American Movement Ezine, the Azine. A Voluntary Effort Each member of the collective, who is also an activist in community organizations, labor, or student groups, donated his or her own money and time to make this website possible. We do not profit from this effort, nor do we accept advertising dollars.

In 2007 seeing that movement building could be better accomplished through API Movement Building, the Azine became a project of this network. Founding Principles of Unity of the AAME

  1. We believe that capitalism produces inequality, injustice, and exploitation that should be exposed and combated.
  2. We support more collective and cooperative processes and structures as a framework for society.
  3. We support the working people, the majority of society, especially its most exploited and disadvantaged sectors.
  4. We support Asian Americans and other people of color in their struggles against inequality and discrimination.
  5. We support the rights of women and those of other oppressed groups.
  6. We support international solidarity against global exploitation and for national self-determination. We support peace and equality among nations.
  7. We support the preservation of the environment.
