Rutgers Students Push for Asian American Studies
Rutgers University is between New York and Philly is 24% Asian American. It’s close as the highest concentration of South Asians in the U.S. and high concentrations of Koreans and Chinese. With the slogan "Jersey Roots, Global Reach," Rutgers wants to reach a broad audience. However, Asian American Studies is not offered beyond a few inconsistent courses.
Rutgers’ Asian American students are saying, “Asian American studies is a key component of American studies, and the Asian American community has deep roots in the development of America. So why is this resource not offered to the Rutgers community?” What? We don’t need a history?
Under the Asian American Cultural Center Leadership Cabinet, students are organizing a movement for Asian American Studies at Rutgers.
The Rally for Asian American Studies is being held April 6th at Brower Commons. This will kick off Asian American Heritage month at Rutgers!
The students have also tabled to get others to sign a petition.
An on-line petition is posted.
They can be reached at ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES AT RUTGERS! on Facebook.
